Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a Time

In 1984, looking for a better life, Ma and Pa Tilley picked up their family from central California and headed to the heart of the Willamette Valley. Raising their three boys on a small, organic farm north of Eugene, Oregon, the Tilleys focused their efforts on fresh flowers, fruits, and vegetables, and soon, Crossroads Farm was born.

After a decade of helping mom and dad build the farm into a sustainable business, the three boys headed off to college to take the next step in their lives. While studiously pursuing their dreams, the boys learned of the rich agricultural past (and present) of the Willamette Valley, and along the way discovered craft beer and homebrewing. What evolved was a love and passion for the art of old-world brewing. And with their deep understanding of small-farm life, the dream of Agrarian became crystal clear.

The boys started moving this dream to a reality by planting 10 varieties of hops on the family farm, in the exact same field that housed historic hop yards a century ago during the booming hop farming era in the Willamette Valley.

An historic dairy barn complex, built in 1941, soon became the focal point of the dream. Housing cows, farm equipment, and later Pa Tilley’s wood shop, the boys began restoring the complex into a modern, artisanal brewery.

During a gleaning session of the chile fields at Crossroads Farm one beautiful fall day, a passionate, like-minded individual made his way from his historic farming roots of the northern tier to the Willamette Valley in search of a home to continue his practice of the art of brewing and his passion for properly tending the earth.

After 7 years of dreaming, building, and creating, and with the dedicated support of this wonderful community, and Agrarian Ales opened its doors on December 21, 2012, to share our way of life and what we create from living this way.
